After the big show on SUSU Student campus up town and our special Black History Month event, we can’t wait to get back to our usual vinyl business, another strictly all 45s party at The Cellar in Southampton!

From vintage soul, funk and reggae to rare disco and boogie banners all mixed in with the latest 7″ releases, the plan as always is to keep you dancing till closing time with the hope you’ll leave feeling very satisfied that you heard a bunch of great music that no other djs on the block are offering. It’s a hot alternative to the Top 40 , contemporary dance-trends or other cookie-cutter nights out… a unique club night you can’t find anywhere else in the city centre, in true “Soul Cellar” tradition.

Drop in early, take advantage of The Cellar’s happy hours whilst we play our freshest selections or roll though later for non-stop back to back stone cold classics and party bangers.

We’ve had an absolutely brilliant time running the club night since our launch in September 2011. This year alone we have hosted and played shows including Don Letts, Dj Format, Southampton’s Black History Month, James Taylor Quartet, Charley Macaulay, So: Fest, Tonic Music for Mental Health and Headsessions Sound System. Our new residency at Lou Lou’s Vintage fair, at the O2 Guildhall, has been a lot of fun; digging out and playing lots of old 45s that you wouldn’t hear at the club night but offer the perfect afternoon soundtrack for folks perusing the vintage wares. And on top of all that, we’ve even had time to host some cracking student parties at SUSU’s The Bridge Bar.

In January we put out the digital download of our Vol 2 mix cd, which help put us on the map world wide. We can’t thank DJ Prestige from Flea Market Funk in Brooklyn, NY and local hero DJ Format enough for their support. As record collectors, having an outlet to play the music we love is really important to us and we’re thrilled at the prospect of another year on the turntables!

So join us on Saturday 13th September for the best in authentic Soul, Funk, Motown, Northern, Funk, Disco, R&B, Reggae. From rarities to the big ones, it’s all about getting you on your feet!

The good weather finally returns for another year and this weekend it’s the Summer special of Southampton’s very popular Vintage fair at the Guildhall. Surrounded by amazing vintage furniture, fashion, antiques and homemade curiosities all gloriously displayed over 50 plus stalls, we’ll be there from 12pm-5pm providing the perfect soundtrack once again with the choicest selections across the decades 40′s 50′s 60s’ 70′. If you have not been before its really worth having a look. Come and browse the fantastic stalls and hopefully pick up a vintage bargain just in time for you summer hols, or just come and soak up the atmosphere at Mabels tea party.

Our All 45s, all night party returns with very special guest DJ Suspect from Paris, France.

Dedicated to making people dance, Dj & Producer ‘Soulbrother’ Suspect pumps out the finest selections of Deep Funk, Afrobeat, Breaks, Hip Hop classics, Boogie and latin groove, coupled with impeccable control of turntables. Very few djs have rocked alongside the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Pete Rock, Cash Money, Marley Marl so its fair to say this dj knows how to hold a party, expect things to get real funky on The Cellar dancefloor. Hip hop heads will know him best from funk/hiphop production team called The Funk League. The two’s successful collaboration gave birth to a couple of singles, enlisting legendary acts such as SADAT X (Brand Nubian), LARGE PROFESSOR (Main Source), DIAMOND D (D.I.T.C) and ANDY C from Ugly Duckling!

With an all 45s set for SOUL 45, we welecome DJ SUSPECT to this legendary Southampton venue.

If you are a regular to hip hop shows across the city, chances are you have heard Richie warm up for big international acts such as DJ Yoda, The Scratch Perverts, DJ Skully (UK DMC Champion), DJ Vadim, Ugly Duckling, People Under The Stairs, and the legendary Afrika Bambaataa. Expect an all 45s set exclusive to Soul 45, with some of the slickest records in town.

We’re teaming up with Dubheart this weekend for a very special event as they present The Arawak Reggae band from Sardinia, Italy. Winners of the Rototom Sunsplash English reggae competition last year, Dubheart went on to tour Europe and play alongside many great reggae bands including Arawak so it made perfect sense to bring this band to the UK.

We love busting out these classics once in a while and this Saturday night at The Cellar dusting off lots of old vinyl from this most treasured record label. When we started SOUL 45 two and half years ago we were showcasing nothing but Motown and soul on a regular basis, it gave us a stable platform to start the night off in the right direction knowing that these golden hits would be the foundations of the dj sets for months to come. Gradually building from month to month we began introducing more genres from our collection into the mix, letting it grow naturally with the aim of becoming Southampton’s maximum Funk & Soul dance party, but we could not have achieved this without an awesome back catalog of Motown 45s.

This night is a bit of a tribute to those first few shows and we thought the best way to present it would be a dedicated SOUL 45 Special.

Motown is not only the greatest pop music hit factory ever heard but an institution, a state of mind and a style that contemporary acts like Amy Winehouse, John Newman, Beyonce and Adele have cited as being their main inspiration; creating their own versions of the Motown sound, making it totally fresh and relevant today.

All things Reggae, Roots, Dancehall, Dub and Ska are coming to The Cellar next month hosted by Headsessions Sound System – Southampton’s very own high pressure custom built sound system. If you have been to one of their shows before you will know these guys unstinting devotion to the scene is the reason why their nights are successful, and in the past couple of years Headsessions Sound System djs Dubl-U and Hack-it Dubs have hosted some bold parties in town, bringing big selectors like Aba Shanti-I, Reggae roast djs, Channel One as well as live shows from Talisman, One Root and Emiliyah & the Mighty All-Stars with the one goal in mind, keeping the reggae/dub scene alive in Southampton.

Saturday 1st March is the launch of their new night at The Cellar, hosting a United Nations of Dub official warm up party to kick things off, with heavyweight vinyl collector/founder of Suspect Packages and Dub Chronicles radio show dj, Disorda. Plus support from Bournemouth’s reggae veterans, Countryman Sound System and the full Headsessions dj line up B1, REV, Dubl-U, Hack-it Dubs and MC Rasdan.

Reggae got soul! In fact it’s got so much soul that we will be going through our crates again to find all those 45s that deliver just that. Hosting the Cellar bar from 7pm till the early hours, we will be spinning plenty of Soul classics and reggae gold across the labels Stax, Atlantic, Volt, Trojan, Studio One, Jammys, Island, Two-Tone, Motown, Chess, Brunswick and more along with our usual and unusual selections from the Soul 45 play box.

We were very pleased that Soul 45 was asked to provide the soundtrack on the afternoon for the Vintage Fair at the Guildhall in Southampton last Saturday. Surrounded by amazing vintage furniture, fashion, antiques and homemade curiosities all gloriously displayed over 50 plus stalls, we dug very deep and dusted off some really old 45s across the decades 40′s 50′s 60s’ 70′s and took the opportunity to play a few really odd gems we could not leave out for the occasion. Thank you to Lou Lou for having us and all the staff at the O2 Guildhall Southampton for making us feel welcome. We have been invited back to play at the next one so see you then, Saturday 12th April.

We’re thrilled to be on the bill for another show with DJ Format this Saturday at the Cellar in Southampton.  If you came to the show he did a couple of years back and witnessed the audio/visual treat on the “Statement of Intent” tour with The Simonsound, you’ll know that Format’s dj sets are renowned for their boundary-crossing selection of the funk, soul, rock & hip-hop and is easily one of the most highly regarded DJs to ever come out of the UK, let alone Southampton.

With a new LP out, a team up with legendary ’80s mic controller, Philadelphia Soul Man, Phill Most Chill, ‘The Formost’ is an explosive 10 track straight up Hip Hop record, no nonsense beats, rhymes just the way we like them, without being caught out as a old school throwback. Varying in style, tempo and lyrical content from Format and Phill Most, plus the great posse cut “Triple Threat MCs” with fellow Rampagers Oxyen and Emskee,  its one of the more solid record that came out towards the end of last year, and once again complete with artwork by awesome graphic designer and record hoarder Mr Krum.

Hosted by Southampton’s home grown collective Route 2 Roots, DJ Format is sure to set the Cellar alight with body rocking beats and heavy basslines so funky you’re certain to be fronting in the b-boy stance before you know it!

We will be opening up for the local hero on stage for a special set, showcasing our deeper digs and some real banging 45s that we don’t normal spin at the club nights.

After the show there will be a open mic cypher in the cellar bar for any mcs that want to step up with the Route 2 Roots crew.
