We’re rocking the Southampton University Student ball this Saturday night, one of the landmark student events that brings 2000+ students into one of the biggest parties of the year and if your are a new student in town then no doubt, this is already an event in your diary that you don’t want to miss!

Our student parties on campus have been pretty lively over the last couple of years in the Bridge Bar, so we’re really pumped to get the chance to do freshers ball this year and once again showcase the wonder that is the 7″ vinyl record! Freshers can expect diverse line up over a range of venues and we will be there to keep things old school hosting the new Bar Three Diner at the Student union all night. No cd, laptops or tech in sight, just two turntables and a jackpot of raw funk and soul, Motown, R&B, Disco, classic Hip hop, Reggae, Dub and Dance hall to keep the party high on the dance floor.

We are revisiting the BLAXPLOITATION era again this year, screening some of the best and the worst films of the 1970′s black action genre, set to a live DJ soundtrack! Last years production was a lot of fun so we are lookimng to scale up this year with superior visuals from our very own Soul 45 VJ.

For the 10th Anniversary of Black History Month in Southampton, we are putting a special set list together for this show containing nothing but funk bombs and street soul sounds from Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, Isaac Hayes, Willie Hutch, James Brown, Sly Stone and Curtis Mayfield all played out on glorious 7′ vinyl records. Playing full scenes and action clips from SHAFT – SUPERFLY – COFFY – BLACK CAESAR – DOLMITE – THE DISCO GODFATHER – BLACK BELT JONES – COOL BREEZE – BUCK TOWN – TNT JACKSON and loads more all edited and mixed up for an awesome visual treat. Start practicing your gangster boogie and great ready to dance to the baddest grooves and slickest scores from the funkiest film soundtracks ever made.

Between 1971 and 1978 American movie theatres were swamped by cheap films featuring black heroes that in one way or the other fit the profile of exploitation. These were in general B films that revelled in sensational, scandalous or controversial themes (sex, violence, drugs), but also used black stars and racial equality to attract viewers. The action is fast, the dialogue filled with smooth one liners and the clothing was outrageous!

We have a special Blaxploitation prize package to give away for the best dressed. Think gangsters, hustlers, pimps, hitmen, vigilanties and secret agents.

Look out for the official Southampton Black history month guide. Bring it with you and present it on the door for your £3 entry.

Limited to 100 copies only, first come first served and we have gone the extra mile this year with another vinyl styled CD with custom record label, with golden mini record sleeve.

Hope you can join us for a drink or two!

Lou Lou’s vintage fair asked us to get on board as they take their famous vintage fair to Portsmouth for the first time. We jumped at the chance to do another fair in a different city and Portsmouth guildhall is a welcome addition to Lou Lou’s growing list of events, continuing to be the best host for vintage fairs in the UK.

Great to mingle with some familiar faces and the vintage traders that we know from Southampton. Everybody had a good day.

As we were in Portsmouth we invited our friend and Funk Klub dj, Billy ‘Bionic’ Steere to join us on the decks for the afternoon, helping us providing the perfect soundtrack for the day. Thanks very much to the people that came and told us how much they enjoyed the day and it had a really good atmosphere which our music helps create.

The next one is on 22nd November so look forward to doing it all again.

That was a great party!  Rocking the block for 12 hours straight, right in the heart of Southampton’s City centre yesterday. As we were setting up in the morning the rain poured down and it looked like it we were going to call it off but by 1pm the skies cleared and we were blessed with sunshine all day. Our dj line up was not to be missed, playing all 45s of course, and you heard some of the best record collections in town from  Ted @ the Controls, Matt Clark, Tony Gumm, Richie A, Chris Jones and Paul Brock.  Rocksteddy was on BBQ duties once again for this year, serving up the finest street food going…it sold out quickly!  This was the perfect summer show for us, we love the festivals but being able to put on a party surrounded by southampton’s busy city streets, high rises and the Cultural Quarter has something very special about it.

This topped last years BBQ and hopefully we can raise the bar for next year!

Big thanks to all the Djs, Eddy Rocksteady and all the staff at The Cellar for making it happen.

If you were there please get in touch. Follow and like us on the sites! we’d love to hear from you.

We caught up with DJ Suspect ahead of his debut here at SOUL 45 in Southampton (Saturday 14th June 2014) and asked him a few questions to find out more on the Soul brother from Paris.

Please tell us a bit about your background and how you got into collecting records/Djing?

I started getting into music very early when I was a kid. I’ve always listened to a lot of different music. As a listener, I started to catch on to the records early on and its never stopped.

Do you have an early memory of buying records, your first digging experiance?

I was in a record shop in NYC in ’93, and some of the first records I found I still I love a lot today: Digable Planets, Jazzmatazz and YBT

What inspires you to do what you do?

I’m inspired by every moment of my life, the good and the bad ones. I’m also inspired a lot by the people I meet when I get the opportunity to travel.

What are your 3 favourite 45s that you are playing in your sets right now?

Rufus Thomas – Itch and scratch (Stax 1972)
Joseph Henry  – Who’s the king (Desco 1998)
Spanky Wilson – Sunshine of your love (BGP 2003)

but I always change my records, each gig is different, for me it’s important as a dj to bring something different each time

Are you excited about your SOUL 45 debut here in Southampton? What kind of vibe will you be bringing to The Cellar?

I’m very happy and honored to play at Soul 45, UK means a lot to me for the music. I don’t know what I’m gonna bring because I always choose my records at the last minute, but expect some good grooves!

In the last 5 years, people have started coming out to the clubs to hear “vinyl only” djs again. Why do you think vinyl has become popular?

I’m not sure vinyl has become popular in every genre but certainly for funk and soul, I think vinyl is the best format to hear and spread music around. Maybe the people are upset with listening awful mp3s and laptop djs when they go dancing.

Your favorite break?

The Winstons – Amen Brother (Metromedia 1969)

Are you a strict vinyl junkie or have you embraced cdjs, mp3 and other such technolgies?

Strictly vinyl, all day everyday!

What new music are you currently listening to at the moment? (any genre/bands/acts/producers)

I’m really enjoying ‘Stone by Stone’ the new LP by Brooklyn Afro funk band ‘Ikebe Shakedown’ on Ubiquity Records. Check out http://www.ikebeshakedown.com/

Tell us about the new 45 you are putting out with DOC TMK on the Dusty Platter record label?

A guy from this great indie label told us that he wanted to do a release together, so of course we said yes! We’re gonna put a track with ‘A State of Mind’ which is almost finish, and we’re working now to put something fresh on the other side

Any other projects are you working on… What’s next for the Soulbrother from Paris?

There’s a lot of projects I’m working on right now…. I’m gonna do a mix for the mighty Truth & Soul label, with only french rarities which I’m really exited about. I’m part of a crew called KenJanai and we’re releasing a vinyl in September with dope guests like Elzhi, Oddisee and more, then there is my second album with Doc TMK that is well under way and also I’m continuing to do dj sets everywhere I can! Lots to look out for.

And finally, some advice for people who are looking to start a record collection?

My advice would be to always be curious and open minded with music, you can find some really interesting sounds that you’re unlikely to discover if you dont check out a lot of different styles. Dont always stick to what you know.

Catch DJ Suspect with Richie A + the Soul 45 residents at The Cellar in Southampton this Saturday night!

We finally got round to making a short promo film for our ‘All 45s parties’.  We’ve been wanting to make this video so that we could let people who have never been to SOUL 45 before, see a taster of what it’s like and check the vibe out.

Big thanks firstly To Grade A Productions who took the time to chat to us, do all the tapings over a few months and put the thing together and completely sharing our vision. Second shout out to all The Cellar staff who keep our night running smooth month on month! And of course we could not have made it without all the dancers we invited to go in the video. Thank you!

It’s the Southampton Vintage Fair once again this Saturday afternoon at The O2 guildhall. Another chance for us to dig out those dusty 45s from our collection that have never seen the light of day until now, all complete with that vintage snap crackle and pop which we hope provides the perfect soundtrack for the afternoon. Performing alongside us between sets will be 1940s vintage inspired three part harmony group, The Spitfire Sister, hailing from the home of the Supermarine Spitfire on the South Coast. Vocalists Louisa Revolta, Anna Harding and Hannah Castleman have built a reputation as the UK’s premier vintage music makers with previous clients including Orient Express, The National Trust and Larmer Tree Festival.

If you have not been to the city’s best vintage offering before then expect a fun day browsing the stalls of vintage clothing, furniture, crafts and curiosities as well as the incredibly popular Mabels Vintage tea party, with a wide selection of tea and home made treats.  Be sure to get their early to find that one incredible vintage must have before anybody else does. See you at Mabels Vintage Tea party between sets.

Look out for some free badges and stickers on entry!
