Tonic Music for Mental Health fundraiser at The Cellar in Southampton is next month and we’re getting on board for a very worthy cause, raise money to provide free music workshops in Southampton and Portsmouth.

Cellar Originals and TMFMH present a night of live music from 60s and 70s influenced Mod, Pop and Psychedelic collective Fay Hallam Trinity, with support from local Southampton twee heroes The Spiral Tones. We’ll be hosting the Cellar bar all night long playing out special sets in Funk, 60′s Soul, Motown, Boogaloo and Northern just for the occasion. Choicest selections all on 45s only, getting you in the mood before the bands go on stage and into the early hours for the after party.

FHT are a smart mixture of 60′s Soul, Mod, and Psychedelic sound made famous by London’s Legendary Blow Up Club. Fay’s distinctive vocal sound and smattering of Hammond organ always lift the roof live and this is a very rare chance to see her in a small intimate venue in Southampton.

SOUL 45 : Christmas Mix 2013

It’s Christmas time once again Southampton! We’ve gone deeper into our records to bring out another selection of the best Christmas soul tracks we could find. Featuring some new releases and classics recorded straight off the original 45s, while the other more obscure gems were discovered amongst a bunch of cheesy Christmas compilation LPs that we had to bring to light. If you are looking for alternative Christmas anthems this year then stick this on while your family open their presents or take it to a Christmas party.

Be sure to Check out Skiing in the snow by The Invitations which is pure Northern Soul dynamite!

Our Motown collection has taken a back seat over the last few months as we’ve been playin’ out a lot of late 70′s funk and disco over the spring/summer period, but now that the nights have drawn in, its Autumn in Southampton once again. Christmas is fast approaching and we’re getting our most soulful 7s together for a festively funky mix of Motown, Stax and Atlantic with Rhythm n blues, soul, ska, reggae & funk favourites for the coolest of yules!

As a tribute to some of the great artists that have recorded on Motown Records and the perfect show for your Christmas celebrations, we’ll be playing a selection of some of the best songs to come out of the Motown era, alongside our mix of stone cold funk and classic floor fillers to keep you dancing to the early hours.

We’re please to announce that Southampton’s very own Charley Macaulay will be joining her label mates JTQ live on stage this Saturday.

Now signed to Eddie Pillier’s mighty Acid Jazz records label, it would be fair to say that it must be a very exciting time for Charley and her band with the release of her brand new debut LP “All I Know”

With backing from Legendary dj Norman Jay O.B.E, Eddie was given a promo cd with one of Charley tracks on it called “No Good”. Impressed by the track, it was added to the Acid Jazz compilation album, Soul Potential, and within the first visit to Acid Jazz records HQ, she was signed up immediately.

The debut album which is out now (written with her young guitarist Tom James) is influenced by the initial roster of Acid Jazz artists, Brand New Heavies, Young Disciples and Dianna Brown but with the pop-savvy ear of a contemporary generation, her songs are catchy, melodic and fresh.

Charley is no stranger to the Cellar stage, she’s been performing here since she was 13. And we’re very proud that she has finally achieved national recognition and clearly has a great future ahead of her.

We had a brilliant time djing at this years SO:fest 2013 outside Guildhall square with the incredible Steptone Sound System. Now in its second year, SO:Fest provided a variety of music from some of the best talent in the city and of course we were thrilled to be asked to play for a couple of hours in the afternoon with the Steptone and Headsessions djs, providing the alternative soundtrack to the festival. Great to see the city so alive with people having fun and making this massive street party come together.

Don Letts, the original rebel dread returns to the Cellar this Autumn. We could not be happier to welcome back to our one’s and two’s for a night of funk, dub reggae and feel good tunes. Still going strong with film making, dj sets across the country and his BBC 6 Music show, this man is a true legend! The Culture clash radio show is very inspirational to us and If you have never listen to his show before please do check them out because its brilliant.

We also have special guests, The Soul Casserole djs – Brighton’s finest funk & Soul revue comes to Southampton. Djs Evil Broke Elvis, Dustee Du and Alkie Tuner bring a spicy melange of Stax, Trojan, Motown, Blue Note, Zodiac, Chess and Loma Records, plus blend of randomness into the pot; from Reggae to Ragga and Blues to Hip hop. Expect an unpretentious night of full speed funky beats as they host the downstairs bar!

We are very pleased to host this event as part of Southampton’s Black history Month 2013.

TICKETS: £6 in advance – £8 On the door.

It’s been an brilliant year for everyone from our home at The Cellar. In the last two years SOUL 45 has played host and supported big international artists and local acts including Trojan Sound System, Eddie Piller, Public Service Broadcasting, Craig Charles, Don Letts, Hannah William & The Tastemakers, Freddie & The Freeloaders, Black Cat Boppers, The Fliks, DJ Format, Mr Thing, New Street Adventure and Afrika Bambaataa to name just a few.

SOUL 45 is now 2 YEARS OLD, and to celebrate we’ve invited the super cool SOUL CIRCLE GANG From Leeds, deliver their own mix of Funk, Soul, Reggae, Afro-beat and World Rhythms as we light the candles; dish out the cake and get the dancing shoes on for our biggest birthday bash yet!

► SOUL CIRCLE GANG (live on stage)
The Soul Circle Gang, a fresh and innovative Leeds based band, brings together eight experienced musicians who weave elements of funk, soul, reggae, world and jazz into unique new sounds. Led by Lara Rose (who has previously sung with The James Taylor Quartet, The New Mastersounds, The Haggis Horns and Corinne Bailey Rae) The Gang are in their element live, delivering sparkling performances featuring energetic grooves, dexterous improvisation, soaring vocals and sweet harmonies that we knew we had to bring to Southampton.

A SOUL 45 birthday would not be complete with out Southampton Soul Club founder, DJ Alfie Linney playing his brilliant collection of original 45s for us once again. Alfie gave us a lot of support in the city when we started the SOUL 45 club night two years ago and its helped bridge that gap between Southampton’s long history of soul nights to new fans hearing these great records once again in a new club night environment.

The original Cellar dj returns! After a great set at the SOUL 45 ALL-DAYER BBQ we have asked Kev to come back and play for us again. Kev has Played alongside greats including Keb Darge, Ian Wright, Jazzman Gerald and Eddie Piller as well as running the Cellar’s Tighten Up night for over 10 years, which showcased most of the cutting edge Funk, Soul and Jazz national and local live acts and DJs, every Saturday night in Southampton.
