A brand new showcase putting some of the best 45 spinners on the planet is taking place with “45 Live”.  Experienced seven inche slingers Pete Isaac (jelly Jazz) and Scott Hendy (Boca 45) have teamed up  to create a community community that brings together Southampton’s own Dj Format alongside the best in the business , Marc Hype, Dj Suspect, Ollie Teeba Andy Smith, DJ Food, Dom Servini, Greg Belson, Jstar, Monk-One, Shepdog and Smoove. Launching their first festival tent this year at Jelly Jazz in Cornwall and several other tour dates plan we expect to see the 45 game taken up to the next level. Hopefully we can work with these guys soon to put on a great show here in southampton. This is going to be a great hub for all things 7″!

Were moving up town to the Alexandra Beer Emporium in February to launch the brand new sets for this year. Its our old drinking ground so it already feels like home! We wanted to keep the night exactly the way it is and finding the right venue was key to maintaining our unique style of Funk, Soul and everything in between. We hope you can join us on Saturday 7th Feb 2015. ‪#‎vinylonly‬ ‪#‎southampton ‬https://www.facebook.com/events/778019265605657/

SOUL 45 : Christmas Mix 2014

Here is our new mix which should kick off your Chistmas party nicely! Once again we’ve got some of our Funk, Soul and Rhthym & Blues favorites plus some extra Xmas nuggets that we hat to put into this years the mix.

It was great fun searching and saving up throughout the year so that we had enough original selections including the super cool 50s doo wop Deboniars ‘Crazy Santa Claus’ which portrays old st nick as both a cool and crazy cat, plus it has that great line ” to all the chicks at the mall shop down the street, got stacks of records with the boogie beat” – With lines delivered in style like that, its a great opener.  Freddy King‘s R&B jumper ‘I hear jingle bells’, from his brilliant christmas double sider 7″ and the christmas classic, ‘White Christmas’ covered by Baby washington thats taking it to new funky levels.

We know they’re on about every Soul, Funk christmas mix going these days but we still wanted to include some more festive 45s made famous by the Tramp Records complitations from a few years back as we’ve not touched them in the previous mixes, like the laid back ‘Stone soul Christmas by Binky Griptite and the groovy ‘Funky Christmas to you’ by J Hines. We also had to included Clarence Carter’s ‘Back Door Santa’ this year as a little nod to the brand new re issue of Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis 45 that came out this month.

‘Winter Man‘ taken from the bside to the ‘Funky Party’ 45 by Clarence Ried is a beatiful little record about the turning of the season, and if you have no love in your life then the winter is going to be tough ride. While not strictly a xmas record, its fitting none the less with tight drumming, ghostly wind blowing sounds and an infectious groove that has a certain ‘Stealy Dan – Peg’ vibe to it. It’s bound to brighten up a mean old winters day and we hope it puts a smile on your face.

Playing in every department store up and down the country while you did your xmas shopping was Mabel Scott‘s lively ‘Boogie Woogie Santa Claus’ so it seemed right to add this popular xmas stomper it to our mix this year, and to accompany it we dug up ‘Christmas Date Boogie’ by Big Joe Turner and ‘Trim Your Tree’ by Jimmy Butler whos clearly a little frisky at Christmas time.  Ray Charles with ‘Snow is falling’, nearly did not make the mix but was left in on the final cut as its reminding us that not everybody at christmas is having it easy. While its lovely to have food, gifts, decorations and parties to attend with friends or family, its important to spare a moment for those that are down and out of luck at christmas time. We finish up with our star on the cover, the wonderful Duke Pearson with the ultimate christmas classic ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas

The download pack is all ready to go for your ipods, 320kbps, all nicely covered and id track tagged, or you can stream it on our SOUL 45 mixcloud page

We hope you have a fantastic Christmas and New year. Thanks again for all the support for what we do in our city on the south coast – See you in 2015!

Over the years we have made some great friends at Soul 45, people that are passionate about music are the people we care about. One of them that we always check in on is our mate Leo from Paris, France, DJ SUSPECT.
We were luck enough to having him play for us and had the pleasure of hearing some incredible french funk 45s back in June, now Dj Suspect has created a very unique podcast mix for NYC based label Truth & Soul, showcasing some of these fantastic records. Packed with funk bass lines, wurlitzer organs and drum breaks that beat makers will be begging to sample, there is no question here that Dj Suspect has taste.

Opening up with the moody rhythms of Georges Garvarentz – “Haschisch Party”,  The mix takes you on a journey of French Jazz, Funk and Soul, featuring giants like Serge Gainsbourg, Jean Claude Vannier and Jean Jacques Perrey. There is something very original and unique about this mix that perhaps only Dj Suspect could pull off with out it becoming cliche. Download and stream, we urge you to do both.

DJ SUSPECT & DOC TMK (feat. EMSKEE & A.S.M.): That’ll Never Happen / Fresh (Dusty Platter 45 Remix Vol.1) (2014)
As well as ‘French Delivery’, this month Suspect has been been busy on production duties, delving deep into the crates for dirty samples with collaborative partner Doc TMK, launching a brand 45 remix series on Dusty Platter. Begining with a great double sider, slick label artwork from Mr Krum (no introduction needed, check the portfolio) and limited to 500 pressings world wide, the A side “That’ll Never Happen” features NYC mc Emskee from the Good People bringing some classic rhyming flavours over these great rolling bongos and warm bass lines.

The flip side sees a remix of ‘FRESH’  taken from the  Jukebox Champions ‎– Don’t Rock The Jukebox LP, featuring the half German, half Canadian team ASM (A State of Mind). It’s hard not to get down to this one and we’ll be dropping both sides at the club night next week.

Chances are this has sold out but there might a few left for the taking if you’re quick
